Chapter Thirteen
Felipe waited by the front door as soon as he heard Lukas rise in the morning. A while later, Lukas emerged from his room and yawned as he bent to pull on his boots. “Guten Morgen.”
“Buenos días,” Felipe said, relieved Lukas didn’t mention anything about the previous night. He wanted to make up for his errant behavior.
The corner of Lukas’s mouth quirked up. They went outside into a typical overcast San Diego morning. Mourning doves cooed. A pair of quail darted across the path and into a clump of bushes. Hummingbirds chirped as they zipped from flower to flower. Grady, as usual, arched his head over the top of the fence. Felipe waited until Lukas was busy filling the wheelbarrow full of hay and patted Grady’s nose. The gelding nudged him, hot breath tickling his neck. “Hey!”
Lukas turned his head. Felipe backed up a couple of steps, feeling suddenly foolish at being caught. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be near the horses; he just wanted to do it on his own without Lukas nearby. He’d had far too much of other people observing and commenting on his actions.
“If you’re going to be out here, you might as well help. See the hose?” He pointed. Felipe nodded. “Check the water barrels in the stalls. If they’re filthy, dump them. If they’re fairly clear, leave them, and make sure they’re all three-quarters full.”
Felipe did as he was told while Lukas spread piles of hay around the arena and let the horses out. Soon four white horses and two gray were munching happily away at their breakfast, tails swishing.
“If you watch long enough, you can figure out the herd hierarchy. Graciela is the alpha mare—see how she moves to that pile and Caprona moves away? Grady’s next, though Graciela is in charge only because she’s his mother. Aria there might be older, but she’s at the bottom of the herd. The younger ones—the gray ones—chase her.”
The herd’s movements fascinated him. The two gray mares kept each other company, as did Graciela and Grady. Grady decided he wanted Caprona’s hay, so she moved off and then took out her frustration on Aria, teeth snapping, ears pinned back. Aria kicked at Caprona, then trotted away to an unoccupied pile.
Water taken care of, Lukas handed Felipe a pitchfork. Felipe didn’t need instructions on how to clean stalls. They worked side by side in silence, moving from one stall to the next and tossing manure into a wheelbarrow. The physical activity combined with the peaceful energy emanated by the herd soothed him. When they were finished and Lukas had dumped the wheelbarrow inside the arena, Felipe leaned against the fence, absorbing as much of the ambiance as he could.
“Stay as long as you like, but don’t go in the arena without me, all right? It can be dangerous if you’re not used to horses.” He turned to leave.
“Wait.” He was being rude, speaking so little, but he was trying to work out his feelings about everything—including Lukas.
